Study Visit to Porto
On February 18th, the 8th-grade students from EB 2,3 Dr. José dos Santos Bessa school took a field trip to Porto as part of their History, Natural Sciences, Portuguese, and Physics and Chemistry classes. The goal was to visit the Biodiversity Gallery and the Botanical Garden, located on the former property of Sophia de Mello Breyner's grandparents, and also... World of Discoveries .
In the Gallery, the students learned more about Charles Darwin and were able to observe examples of biodiversity, reflecting on its importance to humankind. In the gardens, they also learned interesting facts about the various plant species that exist there and that come from all over the world. Throughout the visit, they recalled excerpts from the works of Sophia de Mello Breyner, in particular the short story "Saga". They were able to see that the house “"It was too big, from the bedrooms where the children rode their bikes to the enormous atrium where all the rooms opened onto."” and in which it was possible “"to assemble the skeleton of the whale that had been lying packed away in enormous volumes in the cellars of the Faculty of Sciences for years"”.
They also visited the World of Discoveries where they relived the Age of Discoveries aboard a ship, coming into contact not only with the plant and animal species that the Portuguese were discovering, but also with the different ethnic groups and cultures they encountered. They were able to understand the difficult conditions under which these voyages were made and recalled that Camões also traveled to India in this way, a fundamental journey for writing "Os Lusíadas".
