ClimaGIR Project
The ClimaGIR project raises awareness among 8th-grade students about the preservation of the Portuguese forest.
On May 22nd, 8th-grade students from the Montemor-o-Velho Basic and Secondary School, the Dr. José dos Santos Bessa Basic School, the Pereira Integrated Basic School, and the Arazede Basic School participated in an awareness-raising activity promoted within the scope of the ClimaGIR project, dedicated to the importance of the Portuguese forest and the need for its preservation.
The main objective of the session was to raise students' awareness of the importance of protecting and valuing native species, highlighting their fundamental role in biodiversity, the balance of ecosystems, and the prevention of environmental degradation. During the activity, several species characteristic of the Portuguese forest were discussed, as well as the risks associated with the introduction of invasive species.
Another central theme of the activity was the prevention of forest fires, especially relevant at a time when the season of greatest risk is approaching. Students were made aware of the importance of adopting responsible and preventive behaviors, understanding the importance of protecting the forest and the impact that fires have on the environment, the economy and the population.
The initiative included moments of sharing, reflection, and active participation from the students, contributing to strengthening environmental education and the development of a more responsible and sustainable civic awareness.
Through actions like this, the ClimaGIR project continues to promote values of environmental citizenship and protection of natural heritage within the school community.
